This summer I've been gardening... vegetable gardening that is... and I LOVE it! Maybe not at first, but now that things are actually growing.
It's so amazing to see that these plants have grown from this... and this...
To this...
And it doesn't stop there. It quickly outgrew this 4x16 area to a second spot on the side of the house and I'm still in need of a spot for my okra plants -- right now they're on the patio in small pots.
We started with zucchinni, cucumbers, green beans, carrots and tomatoes in the area above. For some reason, the zucchini plants didn't produce well. They were beautiful plants and would grow these great tiny zucchinnis but they would never get bigger than about 4 inches and then they would rot.
They weren't supposed to be a small species so I don't know what happened. The plants started getting droopy so I pulled them out. Because the cucumber vines were needing more room to grow anyway.
We also bought this blueberry bush 1/2 off a couple weeks ago. We haven't decided where to put it yet so it's still in it's pot. Brixton loved pulling the berries off. He would even eat the green ones.
It's been fun to let him help with the garden. He likes to water it and loves to see everything growing.
Carrots are a weird plant. They have HUGE tops and then there's almost nothing in the ground.
The one on the left is from about three weeks ago. The one on the right is from yesterday. I love Brixton's face in this picture. It makes me laugh. He looks so disappointed.
We had green beans, but they weren't producing much so I pulled them up to make more room for the cucumbers.
This is my cucumber harvest from last night. Those cucumbers are going crazy!!
I have several others in the fridge. I'm really looking forward to pickling them.
When I was little my sister's best friend's grandma (did you get that) made the best pickles. I managed to contact that family for the recipe TWO years ago. I've been waiting since then to grow my own cucumbers so I could make pickles. I guess I could have just bought cucumbers, but there's something about growing them myself. The small cucumbers are pickling cucumbers. I actually thought they would get a little bigger. My father in law said that when they start to turn white it means they are going to seed (or getting to big and bitter).

It is so much fun and feels so ORGANIC. I only grow a few things but love the progress. My zucchini got taken over by squash bugs while I was gone, but I may try again for a fall garden.
I'm so impressed!
We have a massive garden too! The hail storm did a number on most plants and we had the same issue with the zucchini. We also did pickling cucumbers, but they got really big!
You may not have enough "organic matter" i.e. manure in your soil. If you don't compost try it but make sure it is well rotted before you use it. Your carrots look like they need more time and if they are continually too small they need more space so you should thin them. Carrots like a lot of room and very loose soil. Good luck and good job!
