Reflective Moments In Baby Bible Class

I love teaching Bible class! And I love all the silly songs to the tune of "I'm A Little Teapot," "Mary Had A Little Lamb," "Jesus Loves Me," and so on and on and on.

Yesterday I was teaching a group of almost 2 year olds and came up on one of the songs I've sang dozens of times, if you've taught you'll know what I'm talking about.. it's to the tune of "Yankee Doodle."

"Mommy stays at home with me,
She has a lot to do.
She (does this and this and this and this)
And makes us dinner too."

FYI, parenthesis mean I don't know the words exactly. They're something about washing clothes and dishes and, you know, mom stuff.

I think it's a great little song, but it actually upset me this time around. Why? you ask... Well, I don't stay at home with my little boy. Sure, I try really hard to clean and do laundry and wash dishes and make dinner, but sometimes it doesn't happen. I had a split second where I paused in class and thought, "hmm.. when my kid hears this song it's not true for him."

I work and don't stay home for a few reasons that aren't really worth talking about here. I do sometimes feel guilty that I'm not at home with Brixton, but I know that I do my best to make the time I have with him valuable.

I really respect anyone out there who does stay home, for whom that is an option. I just hope you know what a blessing that is, but I also hope you know those of us who work try just as hard to do everything we can for our kiddos (even though laundry often doesn't get done and my kid has worn pants out of the hamper on several occasions and if it weren't for a dishwasher dishes would never get done either).

Don't worry I'll still sing this song in class... and I don't think it's a bad song.

You should just make up a verse for Brixton
Mommy works at KFOR
She has a lot to do
She reports the latest breaking news
And makes us dinner too!

I've taught baby Bible class for 8 years and I've never heard of that song. I work during the school year about 12 hours a week and you know what? My living room hasn't been dusted in who knows how long, laundry needs to be done, and sometimes for dinner we are pouring out the cereal or spreading the PBJ. Please don't beat yourself up. You are a great mom! And look what a great little boy you have! And bonus for me: I like watching the news when you are on! You are fabulous!

I know exactly what song you are talking about. There are several songs though that don't fit the mold for all the kids. Some don't have mommies or daddies around and we sing them songs about how they work so hard and do this and that. It's hard to make the song fit everyone. But like everyone else said, you are an awesome mom who loves little B beyond the limits and I love all aspects of your life that make you you!!
