Basement Project: A New Ceiling

When we started the basement project I only intended to pull down the walls -- but one day Nate got a helpful bug and came down and decided the ceiling needed to go to. So down it came.

We were left with this...
Now, the last update showed off our lovely new wall. Since then the rest of the drywall on that wall has been torn down, new electrical added and that nice, non-working intercome removed from the room. By the way, I'm sure those intercoms were handy at one point, but I don't know of anyone who still has working intercoms in their house????

Thursday I was off and my dad came over. We bought a TON of drywall and rented this handy dandy drywall jack to help put up the new ceiling. Letmetellya... this invention is one of the greatest tools ever! Without this think I'm pretty sure I would have thrown in the towel and had to call a contractor.
Thanks to this jack the job was manageable. I rented it from Home Depot and it was well worth the cost (which I don't think was very much especially compared to the headache it saved us).
Piece by piece the drywall went up.

My dad left about 2/3 of the way through and Nate helped me finish up that night. I have decided that I could get a whole lot more done if I were just a LOT stronger. Seriously, I get motivated but can't do anything because I can't lift drywall by myself, or I'm not strong enough to push on a drill hard enough for it to "dimple" the screw into the wall. Frustrating!

We also put these little metal plates on the studs where the new wiring passes through. These are to make sure that if we are ever drilling into the stud/wall in the future we don't accidentally drill right into an electical line. Smart invention, huh? I hammered all of these into the studs while Nate used his manly strength to nail up the last piece of drywall.  Now to get those walls covered and some taping and bedding done. Progress my friends, progress!
And a lot of PATIENCE!!

That jack does look amazing. Very helpful when you don't have many sets of hands OR don't want to stand there holding up dry wall. Brilliant. Lookin' good!
