He Turned TWO and I Made An Awesome Cake

I guess I could be a little more humble about that, but I am still pretty proud of that cake -- I'll get there. But first...

I can't believe this little guy is TWO!! He turned two back at the end of October, I'm just really behind... technically if I went by my due date he would have turned two yesterday so I'm not that far behind right?
He had a great birthday at home with us and then a little party the weekend after -- there were lots of gifts...
And of course some food...
Take a closer look -- see that cake!!
Yup, I made that little construction masterpiece. This is by far the most amazing cake I have ever made! Yes, I'm a quite proud. Sorry for the arrogance.

Originally we were going to do an Elmo party, but we asked Brixton one day and he said he wanted a "digger" cake so my wheels started turning.

I did lots of googling and came across this cake which was my main inspiration. I started with a chocolate cake and made chocolate cream filling. Then, since I level my cakes, I had a TON of scraps so I crumbled them and stuck them to the side. The icing is all buttercream. The "tape" and the "2" is marshmallow fondant. Super cheap to make and super easy! I may never buy fondant again. I quartered the recipe so I wouldn't have a ton left over. It ended up being the perfect amount. The little trucks are from Target. I even made a little road closed sign and cones out of left over fondant. And yes, the digger is digging a hole in the cake.
It took me a couple of days to make, but it was all worth it for this little guy.
Although I have now set the bar pretty high for myself. Hopefully next year I won't disappoint.
