Construction Cake

I've posted this before, but decided to post it again and "pin" it. I looked on Pinterest a while back for construction party ideas and there were hardly any. Maybe this will help another mom/cake maker out.
I had asked B what kind of party he wanted for his birthday and he said, "digger."

He loves construction trucks -- so my wheels started turning. Here's what I came up with.
The cake is chocolate with an awesome chocolate with creme filling! The "2" and the bottom name banner are made out of marshmallow fondant with a black buttercream icing outline or writing. The road block sign is fondant too. The cake is covered in chocolate buttercream icing and the "dirt" around the outside is cake crumbs that came from leveling my cake. Once leveled there were a lot of crumbs that I would either eat or throw away and then I decided to just use them on the outside.
I think it turned out to look pretty cool. I also used the crumbs to fill the dump truck and make a dirt pile. The trucks came in a pack from Target for about $6.
This was my first stacked cake. It was not as hard as I thought it would be, but it was VERY heavy. I made the cake over 2-3 days. A baking day. A basic decorating/fondant building and dirt setting day and then a couple of hours before the party I put the trucks on and used the "digger" to dig a hole in the cake.
The party was actually pretty simple -- he is just two. I know some people go all out, but we let the cake be the main treat. We also had crackers and cheese in the big dump truck to the right and just had pink lemonade for punch.
It all made this kiddo pretty happy.
