A 3 Year Old's Road Trip Survival

On our recent vacation we spent a LOT of time in the car ... 5 hours here, 3 there, 8-9 another day. Before heading out lots of friends gave me great advice. Here's the top things that worked for us -- keep reading for my top 3.

Dollar Tree chalkboard: This was great until a certain 3 yr old ripped the eraser in half (just past Shawnee, Day 1). That resulted in meltdown #1. He loved the chalkboard but refused to play with it from then on.

Leap Frog Tag Jr: The cool thing about this was he has never really understood how to use this toy. After a few hours in the car he has it down. We had four books for him that he enjoyed over and over again.

Sleep: Sadly, there was not a lot of this but it did get us through about 3 hours on the way home.

We had a few stops to 'get our wiggles out.'

A friend had loaned me a huge quiet book. He didn't use it much, although now that we are home he loves it.

That same friend suggested the trip to a dollar store. She even suggested wrapping old toys that would be like new. I never got around to that but seems like a great idea. I did have a coloring book and plastic dinosaurs for him but those were not a hit.

Top 3...
Baby Wipes: At first I was reluctant because I had the wipes in case we actually needed them. However, I quickly realized his enjoyment in wet wipe bathing himself and cleaning his car seat for at least a half hour at a time was worth a wasted wipe -- or 10.

Glow Sticks: They may not be #1, but they were a HUGE hit!! This was at nightfall Day 1.
He was entertained for well over an hour (and let's face it Nate and I were too).
I got a pack of 5 from Dollar Tree for $1 (of course). One of the best dollars I have ever spent!!

The Number 1 best way --

The iPad! Specifically these apps...

Those apps do not require Internet to work which was fantastic since we don't have data plans on our iPads.

We also downloaded some Sesame Street podcasts and a free episode of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. The downside is now he thinks he can play on the iPad every time we get in the car.

He is currently going through a forced iPad detox.

Glow sticks are a great idea! Should have thought of that for our over night driving trip. Next time ;)
