We are not only working on our basement but our front garden. OK, I went a little crazy with the panoramic shot here. This is the front of my house when we moved in -- no curve it's straight, but looks curved here. It was an overgrown mess. We bought a foreclosed home so no one had cared for this in quite some time.
We hired Richard Walker to come and tear everything except one bush out. Here is the after of the tear out.
From one side...
and the other.
We hired a lady to help us plan out the new garden (because we know absolutely nothing about gardens). We had to pull out a few stumps, and this week are trying to get the soil all prepped. Yesterday, Lawns By Murphy delivered 4 cubic yards of compost to our house. It is SUPER stinky. Looking at the pile it didn't look like too much.
But after putting this kiddo to work with his shovel and wheelbarrow I realized just how much there was.
Don't worry I helped him. And so did our little neighbor girl, Avery. She actually was a big help and moved a lot of dirt. I worked for about an hour with her before Nate came home and then after dinner she came back and helped some more. Brixton on the other hand got bored and just dumped the compost on his head. Then he made us stop working because he insisted on taking a bath.
We didn't get all the dirt moved, but did get most of it. We are going to have extra to use in some other areas.
We have bought some of the plants we need and should hopefully be able to start planting this weekend. First, we have to mix the new dirt with the old.
But before we plant comes another project -- Friday we are dealing with this...
See those little things flying around. Those are bees living in that corner of our patio wall. We don't think they go all the way in to the house but they might. There are SO MANY of them!
Fortunately, we found a beekeeper from Stillwater to come and take them. Did you know you can't just kill bees if they live in your wall because if they are honeybees then there is likely honey in there and if they all die the honey will rot and then ants, roaches and other pests could move in. Besides, bees are one of the most amazing creatures ever. They pollinate everything which means they are huge in making sure we have food to eat. So, instead of killing them we will let the nice beekeeper come vaccuum them out of the wall and take them away. Now we are trying to find a mason to come and gently take apart the wall so the beekeeper can get the honey out and so that we can put the wall back together. The beekeeper is coming on Friday so hopefully I can post about that after he takes them away.
In other news, I painted a new coat of paint over the basement floor. I think it will work. Now, I have to seal the floor again. In the meantime, Brownie has been moved to the garage during the nights. I did take her to the vet. She has some kind of parasite and is on an antibiotic. If you know anyone that may want a dog we are probably going to give her away. She's almost 9 and is potty trained (except when she gets sick). We just don't have the time for her that she needs/deserves. She's probably not good with small kids and has a lot of energy. Anyone with teens or older kids who would want a dog they can play with would be a good fit. She LOVES to play and should get a lot of exercise.
